Behind the AI Curtain Workshop - Fall 2026
The DELPHI Data Science Initiative is hosting a three-part workshop titled Behind the AI Curtain: Literacy, Workflows, and Responsible Use. This three-part workshop series will take place from 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 1; 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM on Wednesday, September 2; and 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Monday, September 28. This is an IN-PERSON event to be held in the HELIX building on the University of Utah campus.

This three-part workshop series will take place from 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 1; 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM on Wednesday, September 2; and 9:00 AM- 12:00 PM on Monday, September 28. This is an IN-PERSON event to be held on the University of Utah campus. This course is open to ALL faculty, staff, and students.
Instructors: Seneca Moore, PhD, RN (Research Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing), Jens Kristian(JK) Schou, PhD (Postdoctoral Scholar in RAI & SCI), and Mary Killela, PhD, RN (Postdoctoral Scholar in Nursing & HCI)
Overview:
Day 1: 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 1
Join us for a hands-on workshop designed for learners who want to use AI with greater confidence, skill, and responsibility. We will begin by Seneca taking us “behind the curtain” of generative AI, building a practical foundation for understanding what these tools can do, where they can go wrong, and how deepening our AI literacy helps us become more discerning users and better human decision-makers. In the second half, JK will lead an applied deep dive into how to integrate AI-supported workflows, including prompting strategies and NotebookLM.
Day 2: 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM on Wednesday, September 2
Learn practical prompting techniques and discover how to integrate AI into individual and team workflows to save time, improve communication, and support better decision-making. Whether you're faculty, staff, or a student leader, you'll gain hands-on strategies you can immediately apply to support collaboration, planning, writing, and other everyday work.
Day 3: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Monday, September 28
We will focus on structured collaborative exploration of your experiences and takeaways from using the tools and workflows introduced on day 1. Through guided discussion and collaborative reflection, we will explore what worked, what felt challenging, what raised questions, and how participants might adapt AI-supported workflows from each other to their own professional roles.
Audience: The primary target audience of this workshop is AI beginner to intermediate users, while experienced users can expect to sharpen their practice.
